World Press Freedom Day: Discussion with Journalism Students

To mark World Press Freedom Day, Media Council of Mongolia (MCM) and the "Nest Center for Journalism Innovation and Development" jointly organized a discussion on "Journalism Ethics and Media Self-Regulation" under the global theme "Shaping a Future at Peace". The event brought together fact-checking student clubs from the National University of Mongolia (NUM), the Mongolian National University of Education (MNUE), Otgontenger University, and the School of Liberal Arts and Media Arts at the Mongolian National University of Arts and Culture (MNUAC).

The discussion featured a presentation on "The Role of the Media in Democratic Societies" by D. Iderjargal, Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Public Relations at the National University of Mongolia (NUM) and member of the Ethics Committees of the Media Council of Mongolia, together with B. Nyamsuren, columnist at "Zuunii Medee" newspaper and fellow Ethics Committee member. They shared insights and experiences from their participation in the "Role of Media in Democratic Countries" Co-Creation Program, organized annually by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to strengthen media participation and self-regulation in democratic countries.

Ts. Chimeddondog, Vice Chair of the Ethics Committee of Radio, Television, and Website, delivered a presentation on "Journalists' Ethics and the Code of Conduct," offering practical guidance to aspiring journalists on producing professional and ethical journalism.

Kh. Bolormaa, Chair of the Ethics Committee of Newspapers, Journals, and Websites, presented "How Are Complaints Related to Journalistic Ethics Resolved?", introducing participants to the complaint review process and the work of the Ethics Committees.

L. Anudari, Program Manager at the "Nest Center for Journalism Innovation and Development", gave a presentation "Promoting Ethical Standards in Journalism: What Is the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI)?", introducing the Journalism Trust Initiative, an international framework designed to strengthen public trust in journalism and combat misinformation.

The event also provided an opportunity for fact-checking student clubs to present their activities and exchange experiences. Participating clubs included NUM Journalist from the National University of Mongolia, VIBE MNUE from the Mongolian National University of Education, CheckLab from the Mongolian National University of Arts and Culture, and CheckPlus from Otgontenger University.

Closing the discussion, G. Gunjidmaa, Executive Director of the Media Council of Mongolia, emphasized the vital role of young people in strengthening media self-regulation and promoting ethical standards across the journalism profession. She commended the students for their initiative and active engagement in advancing responsible journalism.
